Local Boys help at Adelaide Book Launch

Local boys Toby & Luke Herriman have had the pleasure of meeting and participating in the last two book launches of well known South Australian author and illustrator Brenda V. Northeast.

Both boys attend Open Access College and were lucky enough to meet Brenda last year during Book Week. They attended a ‘Face to Face’ day for students at Marden and Brenda was there to show her books and do a painting workshop.

The boys were very taken with her work and talked with her at length.  When she did the talk about her books, she asked if anyone would like to dress up in her teddy bear outfit.  I was the first to volunteer to try on the suit, with Luke close at hand to take photos. Brenda uses stories about Teddy Bears to introduce children to the art of some of the masters (such as her third book – ‘For the Love of Claude’ where she features the work of Claude Monet), in such a way that all children can appreciate the work of these great artists.

Brenda kindly visited Toby in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital last September while he had his palette replaced, and they have since formed a close friendship.

Toby’s first official outing as Brenda’s ‘Bear’ was last October, at Burnside where she launched her third book entitled ‘For the Love of Claude’ with much singing and dancing from ‘Andy and Bookworm’ from Channel Seven's "Bookplace".

Last Friday 19th April, 2002 at night, in Rundle Mall Brenda launched her latest book called ‘Bears Gallery, An Alphabet Book’.  She was again accompanied by her favourite live ‘Bear’ who had lots of fun reading books and giving out ‘teddy bear biscuits’.

All of these functions have been photographed by my brother Luke and presented to her on CD-ROM.

My brother Luke has even been able to do a PowerPoint presentation on For the Love of Claude for his English studies and sent it to Open Access on CD.

Brenda has also visited here as she loves the country and showed the boys how to draw and paint.  The boys have also been lucky enough to see some the beautiful art work that she has done. Brenda is an inspiration to all who meet her.
