Luke Herriman - Story of 1997
The Purple Porcupine
One day
when it was fathers day, Dad and I went to the farm after we
got there we went around the paddock. Suddenly Dad whispered
"Luke be quiet" and I seen a purple porcupine.
We crept up to it until we got 20 big steps
away. Then we sat down
and watched it eat the ants. Slowly, slowly it got closer until
it got so
close that I got scared and jumped up onto Dad and the purple
porcupine got so scared that it dug away under a prickle bush.
Later Dad said "The purple porcupine was really an echidna".

The above story was written as a
story for Luke's teacher in grade 1, who asked
them to write about a "purple porcupine". Luke was
lucky enough to be able to
relate to a true story of s close encounter with an Echidna,
which is the
Australian equivalent of a porcupine, it is not related, as it is
a mammal.
That experience was one of the best Father's Day presents I could
experience
with my son Luke - I can tell you. We love nature and being out
bush.
