Yorketown Telecentre 2004 - April

Microsoft Longhorn - "what is it"

"Thank You" to the Yorketown Telecentre and it's Coordinator Andrew Cheel  and Volunteer Colin Mason
for hosting our meeting this month and especially to Peter Hancock for arranging it.

It was great to catch up with some of the locals who came along to talk with us.

"Longhorn"
Microsoft windows - to be released some time in 2006 - what it will mean to you?
Certainly as programmers we are seeing a lot more of the programming side .NET already
with the release of Delphi 8 for .Net, but why will our clients choose to use it?
This is often the driving force as to why WE as programmers change environments.

The theme this year was Microsoft Longhorn - "What is it?"

A small group of Database Developer Association of SA members came from all parts of the state to meet with local Yorke Peninsular computer enthusiasts at the Yorketown Telecentre on  6th April 2004.

We all enjoyed the cheery welcome by Margaret Cheel
. Thanks to some great research by Andrew Cheel the Yorketown Telecentre Coordinator, the group was able to watch some videos downloaded from the Microsoft MSDN TV series. These were viewed on the Telecentre's datashow. What a great way any organisation can view training material or entertain everyone.

Andrew explained that he had an interest in this subject since first hearing about it, quite some years earlier. The first video gave a general overview of some of the sub-systems that will make up Longhorn. We had a break with some very delicious local Pizza and afterward had a closer look at the new file system called WinFX.

Discussion about the new system finished off the night. Some of our group are skeptical of Longhorn's success, and the need for change and benefits of it, while others are hoping it will be a better 'Windows'. Certainly Microsoft and some of its partners are spending a lot of time and effort to ask programmers and users what should be in the system and they have for instance taken the 'best' of all the various technologies around to help make this new system a better one. Andrew also had the computers at the Telecentre pointing at various web sites related to Longhorn for anyone to browse. As always there was plenty of information and not enough time to see it all. Andrew helped out there by supplying a CD with some of this information, so we could review it later, which was a fantastic idea.

Some of our members are planning to attend the Australian Delphi User Group (ADUG)
Delphi .Net Developers Conference in either Sydney or Melbourne at the end of April to get up to speed in programming in .Net technology - which is available today with Delphi 8

We hope to do this trip again next year. THANKS YORKETOWN TELECENTRE.
